The world of electronic music has taken notice of the ground-breaking new album Música Metaphysica, by Mauricio Reyes, who composes under the name “Robol.” His debut album uses sound samples that were recorded during séances and other paranormal events, then hugely ampli ed and mixed to create a new kind of journalistic sound research which takes this genre to the next evolutionary level.
Initial ratings and reviews by industry insiders have this album tracked to change the market and perhaps even the meaning behind current electro-acoustic music.
Reyes composed, engineered, performed and arranged this electronic symphony over a period of a year. The result is an extraordinary journey through di erent dimensions and environments, which are connected like a system similar to that described by Albert Einstein in his theory about “worm holes” which connect di erent realms in space and time. Although the composition breaks new ground in the technology of electronic music, it is at the same time profoundly emotional.
Mauricio Reyes was born in Mexico City in 1969. Although this is his rst published composition, at the age of 15 he purchased his rst set of Technics 1200 turntables and experimented with di erent records playing simultaneously, some of them playing in reverse.
Over the years Reyes devoted much of his time collecting very rare examples of early electronic music. These recordings include artists such as Luigi Russolo, Teresa Rampazzi, Pietro Grossi, John Duncan, Pauline Oliveros, The Ha er Trio, early Dutch Tape Music, and several recordings by the League of Automatic Music Composers, which existed between 1978 and 1983, and the Institute of Sonology, active between 1959 and 1969 in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
In composing Música Metaphysica, Reyes contacted three centers for the study of paranormal activity and electronic voice phenomena (EVP), which are electronically generated noises, such as static and background noise, which resemble speech. Some observers believe these to be of paranormal origin, though others nd natural explanations for them.
